Nina Ricci & Today

Nina Ricci

L’Air du Temps perfume created by Nina Ricci in 1948

Was having a browse to see what interesting things occurred on January 14th. Needless to say, there were several notable wars, abdications, coronations etc.

However one interesting, more frivilous fact stood out for me – Nina Ricci was born on this very date. Who you might ask, was Nina Ricci?

My own first memory of the name is of a gift of a bottle of her perfume brought home as a gift from Paris by my Dad in the 80’s. So i was intrigued today to find out more…the very perfume I learned was L’Air du Temps (the air or mood of the times), created by her in 1948 & so firmly putting her name on the style map.

Nina was actually Italian, originally named Maria. However, the city of light beckoned her & it is there that she established her fashion house & perfumerie in the 1930’s – making her a contemporary of Coco Chanel. Her label continued from strength to strength in the swinging 1960’s with a photo of Twiggy wearing a mango-orange wool dress from her boutique line taken by David Bailey featuring on the cover of Vogue in ’67 .

Nina simply aimed to create beautiful, wearable clothes and to this end she succeeded as her name lives on through her fashion house today.
